I don’t understand what the question wanted them to do….
It seems evident to me that the student interpreted the problem statement phrases in sequential fashion, putting the arithmetic operations in the correct order. *HOWEVER*, once they completed writing the numbers and operations, in the correct order, they then put parentheses in as though what they’d written was to be evaluated via the *ORDER OF OPERATIONS*. What we should have seen was: (((b – 3) X 10) – 30) / 10
How wrong is the answer? It depends on the way you interprete the question, if this answer is right or wrong.
