Time-telling puzzle

Today a student wrote ten past six on an analogue clock as 6:40.

She then wrote 25 past nine as 10:10

Ed sends this, along with the answer. Can you figure out what this kid was doing?

(Telling time is in CCSS. Huh, didn’t know that.)

I love it!

This is a truly awesome “mistake”–really more of an instance of trying to make sense of something unfamiliar. And really, our colloquial language about time can be strange and confusing to the uninitiated. Of COURSE “ten past 6” should be 6:40. 🙂
